    Net Worth Calculator Hack

    Some have asked for clarification on how to make a Net Worth Chart similar to Figure 1 and 2 posted in the My Net Worth - April 2008. So here is a quick explanation on how to Engineer/Hack the Net Worth Calculator to work for you.

    1. Highlight the net worth values you’d like to chart.
    2. Click on the Insert at the top and scroll down to Chart.
    3. The chart will be preset to Column. Select Line.
    4. It will be preset to show the data points, if you don’t want these showing, click on the block in the top left then click on the Next button.
    5. You should now be looking at a preview of the chart that will be created.
    6. Click on the Series tab at the top.
    7. There will be a blank field to the right of Category (X) axis labels:, click on the square button in the very right of the blank field.
    8. You will be brought back to the spreadsheet. Highlight the fields in the Date column that corresponds to the net worth fields you highlighted previously, then hit the Enter key. You’ll be brought back to the Chart Wizard and click on the Next button.
    9. Add a values to the Title, x-axis and y-axis, like “My Net Worth”, “Time” and “Dollars”, respectively.
    10. Click on the Legend tab and de-select Show Legend. Click on the Gridlines tab and under Category (X) axis select Major Gridlines. Click on the Next button.
    11. Select As new sheet and name chart whatever you’d like and hit Finish.

    Viola! You’ve charted your net worth! Just knowing these basics will help you to create and explore the different options of plotting/charting all aspects of your financial progress. Anything on that chart is infinitely customizable. Click away and start learning how to change it to your liking. If you need to add another month of data points in the future, Right-Click and hit Chart Options.
