Get $50 Free For Your HD-DVD
By JD Bluefield | March 23, 2008
Now that the HD-DVD format is officially dead, retailers are offering longer return policies and even gift cards to the unfortunate early HD-DVD adopters. Best Buy is sending customers who purchased HD-DVD products a $50 gift card and extending their return policies to 90-days, versus the standard 30-days. Circuit City quickly followed suit with a matching return policy.
In my opinion, the gift card is a great cheap way for these companies to capitalize on this bad news and get semi-free advertising. They win back disgruntled customers who will no doubt spend more than the $50 gift card.
If you’re currently stuck with a Beta-max-esque HD-DVD player/movies, here’s what you need to do:
- The 90-day return clock is running, so drop what you’re doing.
- Immediately, gather the HD-DVD player and all its movies into a box.
- Return whatever the store will take back.
- Take a picture of whatever you can’t return.
- Post the unsold items on Craigslist, eBay or your preferred merchant website.
- Decide if you really need to buy another video playing device that will drop to a reasonable price range in a year or two and then become obsolete in 10 years.
- If you do, use the credit to buy a PS3. Sony sells every PS3 at a loss to get you to buy their more profitable video games. The PS3 is a very reasonably priced multipurpose Blu-Ray player, that’s internet ready, 1080p compatible and plays video games!
I’ve heard that the HD-DVD announcement has also spurned some HD-DVD die hards to scoop up whatever media they can get their hands on. So act now and you might not be stuck with an expensive paperweight and shotgun-targets.
Me personally, I took the spectator seats in this high-capacity DVD battle to wait for the victor. Now that the winner is clear, I’ll jump in when more manufacturers kick production into high-gear and bring down the prices. My DVD player and 32″ CRT are serving me just fine for now.
